Moustache on my 7 year old daughter: Mom to the rescue

October 21, 2013

“Mummy! I have a moustache! (pointing to her upper lip in an exasparated tone) See! See! Mummy! I have it! Help me remove it”

No! not the cute fake moustache that you see for Movember events! Its real facial hair on her upper lip, that she is concerned about. I actually have noticed her facial hair and the hair on her arms and legs since she was a baby. And I actually have facial hair too. When I was a teen ager, I used to bleach it white. Then later on, waxed it, threaded it and if I am extremely lazy, I just shave it.

Note: The photo on the left is from 23 days ago when I started Oil cleansing for my face (and also juice fasting-). Notice the photo on the right… my pores as significantly smaller, my laugh line less noticeable and the overall texture of my skin is much better. But look at the hair on my upper lip.. thats 23 days of growth..and the castor oil also probably made it grow longer faster.. this will be my baseline.. I will not shave/thread/wax for 30 days — and will just use the turmeric/chickpea mask to see if the color will lighten or then on the other side I will use the spearmint mask. For my daughter I will test on her arms first.

Good thing is — its not very obvious (unless you zoom up your lens) or your face and my face is like 12 inches or less apart. Look at the photo below.. I havent plucked my eyebrows so its very obvious but the hair on the upper lips are not noticeable from afar.

Me and Z.. eyebrows obvious but not the hair on the upper lip from afar

Anyways, the hair is still quite annoying specially if you want to do a selfie! (eherm! yes I do love myself once in a while). And the thought that it could also be a sign of hormone imbalance or PCOS.. well we only not just worry about removing it mechanically but also addressing it internally.

Now that I know better, I do not bleach my facial hair anymore (due to harsh chemicals on bleaching agents). So, I would not dare do that to my daughter too. She is also too young for waxing, threading and shaving.

So, what could a mom do? Well, I googled ” natural hair removal” — and voila found a few articles and studies about SPEARMINT.

That drinking 2 cups of Spearmint tea daily will lower the amount of male hormones in the body and therefore reduce/slow the growth of facial/body hair.

I purchased a 453g bag of Spearmint leaves (for her tea), a bottle of spearmint essential oil, clay (to make toothpaste and facial mask for her). I prefer to make it myself so I know what goes into her young skin.

I ordered all of the ingredients from IHERB (and since there is free shipping, I added a few more things for myself). Check this out: and save up to $10 USD on your purchase, by using my coupon code DMD162. There is also free Singpost shipping if your order is more than $40 USD.

Watch out for updates on how I make her toothpaste, facial mask and hair lightener (turmeric).

The studies:

This will not only avoid embarassment but hopefully address any hormonal imbalance issue.

How to make the tea:
1. pour 250ml of boiling water over 1 heaped teaspoon (5g) of dried Spearmint leaves
2. steep for 5 t0 10 minutes
3. will add honey and lemon for taste – she loves Iced Lemon Tea anyway

How to make the toothpaste
1/4 cup clay
1/3 cup boiling water
2 tablespoons coconut oil
3 teaspoons xylitol
5 drops of spearmint oil
1/4 teaspoon salt

Mix clay and salt in a bowl, then add boiling water. Mix well with a hand mixer, then add the rest of the ingredients. Mix all together well, store in an airtight container

How to make a mint/clay mask
probably a tablespoon of clay (it can be bentonite clay or this European clay)
2 drops of spearmint oil on 1 tablespoon of coconut oil

How to make chickpea(gram) and tumeric powder mask
In India this methods are widely used for small kids to remove the unwanted hair because other ways are really harsh on sensitive skin.

Make a paste of Turmeric Powder(Haldi) + Gram Flour(Besan)+ Curd .
Apply the paste gently to the skin portion with hair and let it dry for half an hour(30 Minutes).
Then rub the paste of to the opposite direction the hair growth and apply moisturizer to that area.

Apply it once in a week for four months and you can surely see the changes.

This is my daughter’s baseline photos.. Will update you all after 3-4 months (oh this reminds me of our battle with tooth decay a few years back- it also took daily constitent diy-ing and lots of cuddled and bonding time. Glad to have chance to teach her this life skill.
